An early morning raid on a gambling den located in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district has resulted in the arrest of 74 people and the seizure of approximately 450,000 baht (USD$12 984,02).

The Bangkok Post reports that a three-story commercial building located in Soi Khubon 27 of Tha Raeng area, Bang Khen district, was raided by police and soldiers, sometime after midnight on Thursday morning.

The news agency reports that a total of 74 people, including 33 women and 41 men, who were gambling on card games and high-low dice games were rounded up in the building. Of the gamblers detained, nine were reportedly foreign nationals, seven women, and two men. The report indicates that all of those taken into custody were being held for legal action.

Last month, a military-led team’s raid on an illegal gambling den going on in a commercial building at Soi Ratchadapisek 36, in the Chankasem area of Chatuchak district, in which 65 gamblers were apprehended, led to the transfer of five senior officers from the Phahon Yothin police station in Bangkok to inactive posts.

Other than betting on horse races or the government-sponsored Thai lottery, gambling is prohibited in Thailand. While the prohibition dates back to the Gambling Act 1935, illegal gambling in casinos, along with other forms of gambling, still exist in Bangkok and some provincial towns.
