BetMGM has announced a revision to its terms of service that strengthens the company’s ability to discipline customers who harass athletes, coaches, and other league personnel. The operator outlined a zero-tolerance approach that allows for account suspension or termination when harassment or abuse is confirmed. The change comes as professional and amateur athletes continue to report increased threats and online abuse tied to betting outcomes.

The updated policy expands on BetMGM’s existing authority, which previously allowed account suspensions for unlawful conduct. Under the revised language, harassment itself is clearly defined as grounds for enforcement action, pending regulatory approval. Once approved, the standards will apply across all 30 markets where BetMGM offers mobile and retail wagering, Fox News reports.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to sports integrity – and that commitment extends to safeguarding athletes, coaches and league personnel,” said Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s chief compliance officer. “Our legal, regulated environment enables us to identify misconduct, investigate reports, and take action when necessary. Any confirmed instance of harassment will result in decisive measures, including account suspension.”

Clarifying Enforcement as Betting Grows

BetMGM’s announcement arrives amid continued expansion of legal sports betting in the United States. Missouri became the 39th state to launch legal wagering in December, and the American Gaming Association has projected about $1.7 billion in bets on the upcoming Super Bowl. Against that backdrop, operators and leagues have faced growing scrutiny over bettor behavior directed at players and officials.

The sportsbook stated on X that the policy update “underscores our commitment to sports integrity and player safety.” Company officials emphasized that the revision does not introduce a new power, but rather makes enforcement expectations clearer to customers. Loney noted in an interview that criticism has long been part of professional sports, while threats and intimidation cross a line that damages individuals and the broader perception of fair competition.

According to BetMGM, harassment will be reviewed regardless of whether it occurs online, through social media, or in person. The company said it will rely on its existing customer verification procedures to identify account holders connected to reported conduct and may coordinate with regulators or law enforcement depending on the severity of the complaint.

Athletes Describe the Impact of Abuse

The policy change reflects concerns voiced by athletes across multiple sports. Former San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt previously said death threats from bettors influenced his decision to retire. In another incident, FanDuel banned a bettor who followed and heckled Olympic champion Gabby Thomas during a track event earlier this year.

NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, a BetMGM ambassador, said the updated standards send a message about acceptable conduct. “As a professional athlete, I know how important respect is – both on and off the field,” Sanders said. “BetMGM is sending a strong message that harassment has no place in sports or sports betting. I’m proud to see BetMGM protecting athletes and promoting integrity.”

Baseball players have also described frequent messages tied to prop bets and individual performances. Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito said he raised the issue with MLB leadership after receiving messages following nearly every outing, regardless of results.

More severe cases have involved threats toward players’ families. In June, Texas police identified a man overseas who allegedly sent death threats to Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. after losing money on a wager. The Astros hired security for McCullers and his family following the incident.

“She asked me when I came home, ‘Daddy, like, what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?’” McCullers told The Associated Press at the time. “So, those conversations are tough to deal with.”

Responsible Gaming Beyond Wagers

BetMGM has positioned the anti-harassment update as part of a broader responsible gaming framework. While responsible gambling is often associated with addiction prevention, the company has emphasized bettor conduct as another area of concern.

The operator uses the GameSense program to provide educational messaging and practical guidance, including tips on managing play. GameSense has been integrated into 10 football stadiums nationwide and across BetMGM’s mobile and desktop platforms, as well as MGM Resorts properties. Customers also have access to tools that allow them to set time, deposit, and spending limits.

Company officials said the clearer policy language aims to deter abusive behavior and reinforce expectations as sports betting continues to reach new audiences across the country.
