New York’s online sports betting market delivered its strongest July performance since mobile wagering launched in the state, with sportsbooks generating more than $214 million in revenue despite a decline in betting volume from the previous month.
Data released by the New York Gaming Commission (pdf) showed that the state’s eight licensed mobile sportsbooks recorded $214.4 million in gross gaming revenue from $1.88 billion in wagers during July. The result marked the first time operators exceeded $200 million in revenue during the month of July since online sports betting began in New York in January 2022.
The revenue surge came after a difficult June for sportsbooks. While June established a monthly handle record of $2.25 billion, operators retained a much smaller share of wagers, producing only $116.8 million in revenue. July followed a different pattern, with sportsbooks keeping a larger percentage of betting activity and substantially improving their financial results, according to Covers.
An 11.4% hold rate allowed operators to retain more than twice the share of wagers compared with June’s 5.19% figure. As a result, revenue climbed by more than $97 million month over month even though total betting volume fell by approximately 16.7%.
The July results also represented a 37.8% increase in revenue compared with the same month last year. Six of New York’s eight sportsbooks reported revenue growth from June to July.
World Cup Betting Supports Summer Activity
The 2026 FIFA World Cup played a major role in sustaining wagering activity during a period that traditionally sees reduced betting interest. With the NFL, NBA and NHL seasons inactive during much of the summer, sportsbooks often depend heavily on Major League Baseball and other events to generate betting volume.
This year, however, the World Cup provided a significant boost. New York sportsbooks handled 34.3% more wagers in July than they did during July 2025. June also experienced strong growth, posting a 36.6% year-over-year increase in handle. Combined, the two World Cup months generated approximately $4.1 billion in wagers across the state.
The tournament also produced favorable outcomes for sportsbooks. Betting markets tied to the World Cup, particularly three-way moneyline wagers, contributed to stronger operator performance. Spain’s victory over Argentina in the tournament final was among the results that benefited sportsbooks and helped lift hold percentages during the month.
Although July’s $1.88 billion handle represented a decrease from June’s record-setting level, it remained significantly above previous July totals. The figure surpassed the $1.40 billion wagered in July 2025 and the $1.26 billion recorded in July 2024.
The stronger hold rate also translated into increased tax revenue for the state. New York applies a 51% tax rate to mobile sports betting revenue, one of the highest rates in the country. July’s results generated approximately $109.3 million in tax revenue, compared with roughly $59.6 million in June.
The latest figures pushed New York’s year-to-date sports betting tax collections beyond $725 million. The state generated approximately $1.32 billion in sports betting tax revenue during 2025.
FanDuel Leads Revenue as DraftKings Tops Handle
The competition between FanDuel and DraftKings remained the defining feature of New York’s online betting market during July.
DraftKings accepted the largest volume of wagers, reporting a handle of $661.5 million. The operator achieved an 11% hold rate, resulting in $72.9 million in gross gaming revenue.
FanDuel finished slightly behind in handle with $651.2 million in bets but delivered the strongest revenue performance among all operators. A 13.2% hold rate generated $86.1 million in gross gaming revenue, more than doubling the company’s June total.
Fanatics Sportsbook continued to strengthen its position in the market. The operator handled more than $221.6 million in wagers and generated $21.1 million in revenue. That represented a 129% increase compared with June.
BetMGM reported $138.3 million in wagers and posted an 11.3% hold rate, resulting in $15.6 million in revenue. Caesars generated $11.4 million from $122.6 million in handle while achieving a 9.3% hold.
BetRivers accepted approximately $40 million in bets and finished the month with an 8.8% hold rate. Meanwhile, theScore Bet and Bally Bet both recorded single-digit hold percentages and generated less revenue than they did in June.
Strong Summer Results Extend Market Growth
The July figures reinforce New York’s position as the largest online sports betting market in the United States by revenue. While summer months often produce lower activity due to the absence of major domestic sports seasons, international soccer created an unusual environment in 2026.
The combination of sustained betting interest, favorable sportsbook outcomes and competition among operators helped produce a record-setting July. Even though total wagers declined from June’s historic handle, the improved hold rate allowed sportsbooks to generate substantially higher revenue.
With football season approaching, operators will soon enter the busiest period on the sports betting calendar. July’s performance demonstrated that major international events can significantly influence sportsbook results and sustain strong revenue levels even outside the traditional peak betting months.
