The Board of Kambi Group plc, a well-known provider of premium sports betting services, has announced the appointment of Werner Becher, formerly of Sportradar, as the new CEO. Becher will take over from Kristian Nylén on July 25, immediately following the release of Kambi’s Q2 2024 report.
This decision came after an extensive search and selection process, considering a robust pool of candidates, according to a company press release. Becher’s background in the sports betting industry, significant roles in both B2B and B2C companies and earlier experience in the technology sector, made him the standout choice.
Becher’s tenure at Sportradar spanned four years, beginning in 2019. He initially served as managing director of the company’s US betting division before becoming CEO of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. At Sportradar, Becher was instrumental in the company’s successful Nasdaq IPO in September 2021. Before this, he led European betting and gaming operator Interwetten as CEO for eight years, overseeing consistent growth. Most recently, Becher has been active as an independent investor and advisor.
Upon joining Kambi, Becher will focus on leveraging the company’s recent successes and status as a leading sports betting partner. Kambi has recently implemented a modularization strategy, which includes opening its platform, fostering its AI-pricing division, Tzeract, and acquiring businesses such as Abios and Shape Games.
At The Forefront of the Industry
Becher expressed his enthusiasm about the new role: “I am honoured to take on the position of CEO at Kambi Group, a company that has been at the forefront of this industry for many years and one which I have the utmost respect and admiration for. I join Kambi at an exciting time in its evolution, as it continues to open up its service and widen its addressable market. I am excited to work closely with the Board, our executive team, and our talented employees across the world to deliver on the fantastic opportunities ahead of us.”
Anders Ström, Chair of the Board and Co-founder of Kambi, also commented on the appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Werner Becher as the new CEO of Kambi. Werner is an exceptionally suitable successor to Kristian Nylén. With extensive industry experience, strong entrepreneurial spirit, proven business acumen, and exceptional drive, we are confident Werner is the right choice to lead Kambi into a new era.”
Becher’s appointment follows the January announcement by Kambi co-founder Nylén, who stated his intention to step down once a successor was found. In May, Nylén was elected to Kambi’s Board of Directors at the company’s Annual General Meeting and will continue to support Becher to ensure a smooth transition.
