The cityscape of Chicago’s River West neighborhood is set to transform with the demolition of the former Tribune publishing site on Tuesday, making way for the new Bally’s casino and hotel complex. This significant development marks the beginning of a new chapter in the area’s evolution into a vibrant entertainment and leisure destination.
Officials have organized an event on Tuesday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking demolition, heralding the start of construction on this ambitious project. In late July, Bally’s announced a strategic partnership with Gaming and Leisure Properties involving a $940 million funding agreement, which also introduced an improved site plan for the casino complex.
The planned Bally’s casino complex is poised to become a major landmark in Chicago, featuring a 34-story hotel with 500 rooms and a range of high-end amenities including a 3,000-seat theater and a 2-acre public park. The casino itself will host six restaurants, several cafes, a food hall, and ample gaming space with 3,300 slots, 173 table games, and exclusive VIP areas.
Situated on a 30-acre lot, the development will include a state-of-the-art hotel tower positioned on the southern end nearest to Ohio Street. This tower will boast a large pool, a spa, a fitness center, and a rooftop restaurant, offering unparalleled views and luxury to guests and visitors.
Political and Public Anticipation
Despite some uncertainty voiced by Mayor Brandon Johnson earlier in the year regarding the finalization of the casino, plans remain firmly on track. Mayor Johnson, cited by WMAQ-TV Chicago, expressed a cautious outlook, suggesting that the completion of the permanent casino was still under consideration. However, representatives from Bally’s have reassured that the project is progressing as scheduled.
In the interim, Bally’s has operated a temporary casino within the historic Medinah Temple in River North since September 2023. This venue has seen significant success, reporting record revenues and visitor numbers in May, indicating strong public interest and support for the casino’s operations.
Bally’s temporary casino saw an 11% revenue decrease in June 2024 but still managed to record a 1% increase in admissions. The temporary facility also recorded a significant landmark, celebrating its millionth visitor in June. Through the first six months of 2024, Bally’s Chicago generated $62.8 million in adjusted gross receipts and paid no less than $6.8 million in local tax revenue.
The permanent Bally’s Casino is expected to open its doors to the public in September 2026. As the project advances, it promises to enhance the economic landscape of River West and establish itself as a cornerstone of entertainment and hospitality in Chicago.
