Michigan’s online gaming market experienced a marginal dip in April 2025, as internet gaming and sports betting operators collectively reported $290.7 million in gross receipts. This marks a slight decline of 0.9% from the record-setting numbers posted in March, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).

Despite the monthly decline, year-on-year figures show robust growth in the sector, particularly in iGaming. Online slots and table games alone contributed $248.1 million to the total, highlighting continued strength in this segment. Sports betting, by contrast, brought in $42.6 million, marking an increase from the $33.0 million posted in March.

iGaming Declines Slightly, Sports Betting Shows Surge

Adjusted Gross Receipts (AGR), which exclude promotional deductions, stood at $259.9 million for April. This comprised $233.1 million from internet gaming—a 5.3% drop from March—and $26.8 million from sports betting, which soared 83.4% compared to the previous month.

When placed in a year-over-year context, iGaming AGR rose sharply by 33.9%, underlining long-term sector strength. However, sports betting AGR declined 3.6% from April 2024, indicating some volatility in that segment.

The state’s online sports betting handle—the total amount wagered—was $417.6 million in April, down from $475.1 million in March. Though this represents a 12.1% decrease month-over-month, it still reflects a 4.7% increase from April last year.

Leading Operators and Market Shares

FanDuel, in partnership with MotorCity Casino, reclaimed the top position in April with $67.6 million in gross receipts and $63.5 million in adjusted gross receipts. This edged out BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit, which recorded $64.9 million and $61 million, respectively. DraftKings, operating alongside the Bay Mills Indian Community, came in third with $42.5 million in gross receipts and $40 million adjusted.

In the sports betting sector, FanDuel and MotorCity led with $19.1 million in gross receipts from a $154.6 million handle, achieving a hold rate of 12.35%. DraftKings followed with $10.5 million from a $114.9 million handle, while BetMGM reported $5.8 million on a $53.9 million handle.

Taxes, Tribal Payments, and Local Contributions

State tax revenue from online gambling totaled $49.6 million in April. Of this, iGaming contributed a significant $48.2 million, with sports betting accounting for $1.4 million.

Detroit’s three commercial casinos—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown—contributed $13.1 million in city taxes and municipal service fees. The majority, $12.6 million, stemmed from internet gaming, while $504,986 came from online sports betting.

Tribal operators also played a role in April’s fiscal picture, collectively paying $5.6 million to their respective tribal authorities.

Detroit Casino Revenue Holds Steady

While online revenues slightly dipped, Detroit’s physical casinos posted moderate gains. Combined revenue from the city’s three land-based venues reached $109.8 million, marking a modest 0.4% rise compared to the same month last year. Table games and slot machines generated nearly all of this revenue at $109.5 million, up 1.5% annually. However, adjusted gross receipts from qualified gaming activities plummeted 79.8% to $336,021, with a 2.57% hold on a $9.4 million handle.

MGM maintained its lead in the brick-and-mortar sector with a 47% market share, followed by MotorCity at 30% and Hollywood Casino at 23%. These establishments paid $8.9 million in state gaming taxes and an additional $13 million to the City of Detroit. Retail sports betting added another $20,276 in state tax and $24,781 to city coffers.

As of April, Michigan had authorized 15 commercial and tribal operators to offer internet-based gaming, with 12 of them providing online sports betting and all 15 offering iGaming services. Despite the slight month-over-month decline, the state’s online gambling ecosystem continues to show strong year-over-year growth and remains a vital source of public funding through tax contributions and regulatory payments.
