The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has officially granted licensing approval to Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack, paving the way for the facility’s long-anticipated debut. The grand opening has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, with events planned throughout the day to welcome guests and mark the occasion.
Launching a New Entertainment Destination
Situated just off Interstate 80 in Ogallala, the temporary casino and racetrack will introduce a mix of gaming, racing, and entertainment options. The venue will feature more than 300 slot machines and electronic table games, a 5/8-mile Quarter Horse racetrack, a simulcast viewing area, and sports wagering through ELITE Sportsbook kiosks and retail operations. Visitors will also have access to the Draft Day Sports Lounge, offering a casual setting for food and drinks alongside the betting action.
Dan Kehl, CEO of Elite Casino Resorts, called the approval a turning point for both the company and the surrounding area. “This is an exciting milestone for Elite Casino Resorts, Keith County and the community of Ogallala,” he said. “We’re ready to open the doors and welcome Governor Jim Pillen, local leaders and guests to an outstanding entertainment experience at Lake Mac Casino.”
Beyond the casino floor, the opening represents a significant development for Nebraska’s horse racing industry. The return of Quarter Horse racing is expected to provide new opportunities for local breeders and trainers while boosting the agricultural economy. Cynthia Smith, Director of Racing, noted the wider impact in the company’s press release (pdf): “This return of Quarter Horse racing to Nebraska is a major win for the local and agricultural economy in this area. Most importantly, this boosts the Nebraska Quarter Horse breeders and trainers who now have more opportunities closer to home. We all should be excited about what the future holds for the industry of running Quarter Horses in Nebraska in the coming years.”
The addition of live racing is seen as not only a draw for visitors but also a revitalization for a sector that has long been part of Nebraska’s sporting and agricultural identity.
Grand Opening Day Schedule
The August 19 opening celebration is set to include a variety of promotions and festivities. Gates will open at 1 p.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. The first Quarter Horse race will take place at 3 p.m., with the casino floor officially opening around 4 p.m.
Special promotions include free commemorative t-shirts for the first 1,000 guests, a new member sign-up offer, and a “Bring A Friend” bonus. A complimentary meal catered by Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge will be served from 1 to 2 p.m. next to the racetrack.
Live entertainment is also scheduled inside the casino, with Drew Phillips performing from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by Dave Lerbakken from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.
While the opening marks the launch of a temporary facility, developers have set their sights on broader ambitions for the site. Operated in partnership with Hastings Exposition and Racing, Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack has outlined plans for a full-scale resort development. These include expanded gaming space, a hotel with indoor and outdoor pool amenities, RV accommodations, casual dining venues, and a Ruthie’s Steak & Seafood restaurant.
