Sands China Ltd. has officially surpassed 1.1 billion cumulative visitors across its Macau properties, a major achievement that coincided with the 18th anniversary of its flagship resort, The Venetian Macao. The milestone was celebrated on Thursday with a special welcome ceremony, reflecting both the company’s two-decade legacy in Macau and its growing role in shaping the city’s international tourism profile.
Executives Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman, and Grant Chum, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, greeted the milestone guest with commemorative surprises at The Venetian. The event highlighted the importance of Sands China’s integrated resorts in Macau’s economic and cultural development, while marking a symbolic chapter in the company’s history.
Two Decades of Growth and Transformation
Sands China entered the Macau market in 2004 with the opening of Sands Macao, the city’s first major hotel-entertainment complex. Three years later, The Venetian Macao made its debut, then one of the world’s largest buildings, pioneering the large-scale integrated resort model in Cotai. Subsequent developments included The Plaza Macao in 2008, Sands Cotai Central in 2012, and The Parisian Macao in 2016. Sands Cotai Central was later transformed into The Londoner Macao, reopening in phases beginning in 2021 during the pandemic.
Together, these interconnected resorts have established Cotai as a premier hub for leisure, business, and entertainment. With themes ranging from Venetian canals to London landmarks, the properties have reshaped Macau’s skyline and attracted tourists from around the globe.
Investments Driving Macau’s Tourism Ambitions
According to a company press release, Sands China’s cumulative investment in Macau has exceeded MOP 134.5 billion (approximately US$16.7 billion). This financial commitment underscores the firm’s role in helping the city pursue its vision of becoming a “world centre of tourism and leisure.”
The company’s portfolio features more than 10,000 hotel rooms, 150 restaurants, and 760 retail outlets. Beyond accommodations and shopping, Sands China has made major contributions to the meetings and events industry in the region, providing over 150,000 square meters of convention space. The resorts also host international performances across two arenas and four theaters, offering a combined seating capacity exceeding 25,000.
Commitment to Community and Future Development
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Wong emphasized the broader significance of the milestone: “Surpassing 1.1 billion arrivals is not only a significant milestone for the company, but also a testament to the popularity of Macau’s tourism offerings and the vitality and sustainability of its economic development.”
He credited the achievement to the central and Macau SAR governments, Sands China’s 27,000 team members, and the company’s 2,500 suppliers. Wong added: “Sands China calls Macau home and we are committed to fulfilling our corporate social responsibility while actively giving back to our community. Moving forward, we will continue to work alongside Macau and invest in non-gaming projects to polish further its ‘golden business card’ as an international metropolis, showcasing its unique charm to both residents and visitors from around the world.”
This focus on non-gaming ventures, cultural initiatives, and sports integration reflects Sands China’s broader strategy to diversify offerings and enhance Macau’s attractiveness to global visitors. The company continues to host international roadshows and develop new projects aimed at elevating hospitality, entertainment, and dining experiences in the city.
Looking Ahead
The celebration of the 1.1 billion visitor milestone, paired with The Venetian Macao’s 18th anniversary, signals both a reflection on Sands China’s impact and a vision for the future. With billions invested and millions of travelers still arriving each year, the company’s integrated resorts remain central to Macau’s identity as a world-class destination.
By blending large-scale hospitality with cultural and entertainment programming, Sands China has not only expanded the Cotai Strip but also reinforced Macau’s standing on the global tourism stage. As the company looks ahead, its commitment to diversification and innovation will remain key to sustaining growth in the years to come.
