As it looks to grow its market share in Las Vegas and the rest of North America, slot machine innovator Konami Gaming has turned to its corporate roots with the launch of a new Frogger-themed game at The Cosmopolitan Of Las Vegas hotel and casino.
According to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a video arcade version of Frogger was first rolled out in 1981 but Konami Gaming has now licensed a slot adaptation of the popular game from sister firm Konami Digital Entertainment, which is also owned by Japanese parent Konami Holding.
As part of the test run, the Frogger-themed slot has also been introduced at select casinos in California and is due to be added to the offering at the Aquarius Casino Resort in Laughlin within the next month. Konami Gaming stated that the game could be released at other venues over the next 60 days if these initial trials go well.
“To grow, we need to find a way to address the future gamer,” Steve Sutherland, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President for Konami Gaming, told the newspaper. “The gaming replacement segment we have been designing for doesn’t necessarily play the games their parents and grandparents played. What Konami Gaming is doing is we’re looking at is how do we appeal to that next generation of players and Konami Gaming as well as all of the competitors will get there.”
Konami Gaming is ranked fourth among slot manufacturers with penetration on North American casino floors ranging from 7% up to a high of 20%. However, Sutherland revealed that this percentage does not pass 10% in Las Vegas with the company traditionally doing best in Native American and regional American markets.
“We’re looking at the library of Konami Digital Entertainment because it has certain titles, amusement concepts and games and intellectual property, we will look to bring to this market in the future and turn those into gambling devices,” Sutherland told the newspaper.
