Thailand has strict anti-gambling laws that force those Thais with the taste and affluence for gambling to travel to foreign casinos. Countries that border Thailand have eagerly jumped at the opportunity to offer entertainment opportunies to the Thai tourists. Malaysia, Burma and Cambodia have created venues to attract wealthy Thai tourists and now Laos is completing the gambling rich border.
The development, about 80% complete, is being built in Nongdeune Village in the Savannakhet province of Laos on the border of Thailand. The project features not only the casino, but also a 5-star hotel, restaurants, an amusement park, a water park and luxury spa facilities. The new complex is scheduled to open operations in November.
Financial backing for the project is a joint venture between Thai and Laos investors. They expect to see a large increase in tourism to the region with the new entertainment complex as an attraction and since the Friendship Bridge has made crossing the border easier.
