On Tuesday, October 15th, 2019 the Los Angeles Rams announced a trade they made with the Baltimore Ravens. The Rams are sending their Pro Bowl cornerback, Marcus Peters, to the Ravens in exchange for linebacker Kenny Young as well as a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Marcus Peters is currently in the final year of his five-year rookie contract, and he will be expecting a nice pay raise as he enters free agency this upcoming offseason. The Rams were able to pick up the former first-round draft selection from the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2018-2019 NFL season.

Marcus Peters History

Peters was selected to the Pro Bowl while with the Chiefs in 2015 and 2016. He has played 22 regular-season games with Los Angeles, and in that time, he has picked off five passes while taking two of those back for touchdowns. His new team in the Baltimore Ravens will play the Los Angeles Rams on a Monday Night Football game during week 12 of the NFL season this year.

This trade comes only one day after the Rams placed their other starting superstar cornerback, Aqib Talib, on the injured reserve (IR) list due to an injury to his ribs. It will definitely be interesting to see how Los Angeles will defend against the pass with two new starting cornerbacks this week when they play the Falcons on the road in Atlanta.

Raven’s Defensive Issues

The Baltimore Ravens have had a couple of injuries to their defensive secondary, and that was the driving force behind the trade with the Rams. Baltimore has played the last five games without the services of cornerback Jimmy Smith who had previously suffered a knee injury. They had also lost nickelback Tavon Young for the year due to a serious neck injury.

Starting cornerback Marlon Humphrey has been playing excellent for the Ravens, but the cornerback position on the other side of the defense has been a known weak or vulnerable spot that opposing quarterbacks have been taking advantage of. Both Maurice Canady and Anthony Averett were not performing up to the football standards of the Baltimore Ravens so this is why they traded to get the former Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters.

The Los Angeles Rams acquired linebacker Kenny Young who was also not playing at the level that the Baltimore Ravens wanted. He started the year as the Ravens weakside linebacker, but was a healthy scratch by the fifth week of the NFL season. This trade seemed to mostly benefit the Baltimore Ravens.
