On Thursday, November 16th, 2023 the Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback, Joe Burrow, severely injured his right wrist resulting in season – ending surgery. Burrow’s season is now officially over.
Joe Burrow’s MRI:
On Friday an MRI revealed that the Cincinnati Bengals big – time quarterback suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist in the Cincinnati Bengals’ Thursday Night Football defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. His team stated that Joe’s wrist showed an acute injury that likely occurred during the 2nd – quarter of last Thursday’s game. On the next play, Burrow tossed a 4 – yard touchdown pass in what will likely be his final throw of the 2023 – 2024 NFL season.
“It’s tough,” Burrow mentioned. “You work so hard for seasons and moments like these. Whenever you get hurt and it ends early, it’s tough to handle. That’s a part of the game.”
Burrow explained that he landed on his right wrist following being hit by the Baltimore Ravens defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney, during a 9 – yard play in the Baltimore Ravens red zone. On the very next play, Joe went down in extreme pain after throwing that last touchdown pass to Joe Mixon.
“I felt a pop in the middle of the throw,” Burrow goes on to say “I tried to give it a go but couldn’t get it done.”
The Cincinnati Bengals Back – Up Quarterback:
After Burrow first suspected it was a severe injury to his wrist, and he absolutely received that confirmation when the bad news was delivered to him on last Friday morning. Jake Browning, the Cincinnati Bengals back – up quarterback had to finish the game in Joe’s unexpected absence. Browning will now be the starting QB for the Cincinnati Bengals for the foreseeable future as long as he can stay healthy the remainder of the 2023 – 2024 NFL season.
On Friday, the Cincinnati Bengals head coach in Zac Taylor stated that the initial information demonstrates that players who suffer this type of injury are able to make a full 100 % recovery. However, Taylor did not have a timeline on when Joe will have his surgery on the injured wrist or when he could possibly return to the Cincinnati Bengals’ active player roster. Both Taylor and Burrow understand that they are still gathering all of the information regarding this injury.
Previous Injuries during Joe Burrow’s NFL Career:
This is now the 2nd – time that Burrow has endured a season – ending injury throughout his 4 – year NFL career. The top overall pick back in the 2020 NFL Draft had to watch his rookie year get cut short after Joe suffered multiple torn ligaments in his left knee during an NFL week – 11 regular season loss to the Washington Redskins/Football Team/Commanders.
Coach Taylor said it was very unfortunate to witness a great player such as Joe Burrow, who works especially hard to make sure he is as healthy as possible at all times in order to stay on the field, have another NFL season end way too short especially after his slow start to this year due to his calf injury that he managed to fight through to play for his Cincinnati Bengals.
“It kills you to watch somebody have to go through this, you know, several times now,” the Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed.
On last Wednesday, photos and video came out showing that Burrow was wearing something on his right wrist ahead of the game last week against the Baltimore Ravens. One of those was posted by the team on a social media platform and them immediately deleted.
Controversy Surrounding Burrow not listed on the NFL’s Injury Report:
Burrow told the major sports media outlets that it was a compression sleeve, something that he has worn in the past as he deals with minor ailments over the course of the extremely demanding NFL season.
“It’s not uncommon for guys to wear a compression sleeve on a plane because when you go up to that altitude, things can swell up,” Burrow explained. “Football, you have a lot of bumps and bruises. This is a completely new injury.”
However, the National Football League is currently investigating why Joe was not listed on the Cincinnati Bengals formal injury report leading up to last Thursday night’s match up against the Baltimore Ravens. Taylor publicly stated that he had not spoken to the NFL regarding this issue they are looking into now.
Just as with the wrist, Joe was seen wearing a compression sleeve on his calf before he went down to injury. The Cincinnati Bengals head coach explained that he did not see any commonalities between the two separate situations this year.
The Cincinnati Bengals Heavily Invested:
The Cincinnati Bengals invested in “Joe Cool” as their ultimate franchise quarterback following him assisting in the Cincinnati Bengals reach the Super Bowl after the 2021- 2022 NFL season and the AFC Championship Game after the 2022 – 2023 NFL season, in which the Cincinnati Bengals lost both of those big – time games. Burrow was then granted a new 5 – year contract extension worth up to approximately $275 million and the deal included $219.01 million of that in total guaranteed money. The agreement’s annual average salary of $55 million is an NFL record as well.
The Cincinnati Bengals are presently 5 and 5, and they will now have to turn to Browning as they look to stay in the NFL postseason picture following their loss to the Baltimore Ravens that has them currently just outside of the NFL playoff landscape. Browning was 8 – of – 14 passing for 68 – yards as well as a late touchdown with the game out of reach last Thursday night.
“He’s a big part of this team obviously,” the Cincinnati Bengals back up QB Jake Browning disclosed. “But I’m not going to hide the fact that I’m excited for my opportunity. I think everybody in here, including Joe, kind of knows that.”
“A lot of guys in that [locker] room are injured, have been injured,” says Burrow. “A lot of guys across the league, that’s part of the job that we do. [It’s] expected. It’s not going to be the last time something like this happens in my career, too. That’s just part of it.”
How the Injury affects Sports Betting Market:
