Boyle Sports has reached a major retail milestone with the opening of its 400th betting shop, which will be located at Galway Racecourse in Ballybrit, Ireland. The launch forms part of a new three-year partnership between the bookmaker and the Galway Races, strengthening an already established commercial relationship.

The on-course betting outlet will operate as part of the racecourse experience, adding a dedicated retail presence during racing events. Alongside the shop opening, the agreement includes expanded branding across the venue and additional sponsorship activity throughout the racing calendar.

The partnership further deepens Boyle Sports’ existing involvement with the Galway Races, where the operator already supports key race-day fixtures. This includes sponsorship of the Saturday card during the summer festival, featuring races such as the BOYLE Sports Handicap Hurdle and the Galway Tribes Hurdle.

Company growth and long-term expansion

The opening of the 400th shop marks a significant point in Boyle Sports’ retail expansion, which began in 1982 when John Boyle opened the first shop in County Armagh. Since then, the company has developed into one of the most recognised betting brands across Ireland and the UK.

The milestone comes at a time when Boyle Sports is also pursuing broader growth plans, including a previously announced £100 million investment aimed at expanding its presence in the UK market. Despite this international focus, the company has highlighted its continued commitment to Irish racing and its domestic retail operations.

The Galway Racecourse location has been selected as a symbolic setting for the new shop, coinciding with one of the most prominent weeks in the Irish racing calendar.

Boyle Sports already maintains a wide network of partnerships within Irish horse racing. The company is title sponsor of the Irish Grand National and also supports events at several major racecourses, including Leopardstown, Navan and Killarney. It also holds a long-term sponsorship arrangement with the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park.

The Galway Races partnership adds another layer to this involvement, reinforcing the bookmaker’s presence at one of Ireland’s most high-profile sporting festivals. The event is widely recognised for combining racing with tourism, hospitality, fashion and local business activity, drawing large crowds each year.

The addition of a permanent on-course shop at Ballybrit is intended to enhance the customer experience during race meetings while increasing brand visibility at the venue.

Sinéadh Crowe, Head of Irish Retail Operations at Boyle Sports, described the opening as an important step in the company’s development.

“Opening our 400th shop here marks a major milestone in the BOYLE Sports journey and reflects just how far we’ve come since John Boyle set up his first shop in County Armagh in 1982,” she said in the company’s press release.

She added that the Galway partnership holds particular importance due to the profile of the event within Irish sport. “The Galway Races is one of the standout events in the Irish sporting calendar, so we’re delighted to be strengthening our relationship with the racecourse through this new multi-year partnership.”

The company also emphasised that the agreement reinforces its continued focus on retail betting alongside digital operations, highlighting the ongoing relevance of physical shops within its broader strategy.

Racecourse perspective

From the venue’s perspective, Galway Racecourse CEO Michael Moloney welcomed the partnership and the opening of the new shop on site.

“It’s a real privilege to have BOYLE Sports open their 400th shop here on-site as part of this exciting new multi-year partnership with Galway Races,” he said.

The racecourse views the agreement as a continuation of efforts to enhance the race-day experience and strengthen commercial partnerships that support the long-term development of the festival.

The Galway Races summer festival remains one of the key fixtures in the Irish sporting calendar, attracting significant attendance and commercial activity. The addition of Boyle Sports’ expanded presence reflects continued investment in on-course engagement at major racing venues.

The partnership also highlights how retail betting operators continue to maintain a physical footprint alongside digital platforms, particularly at high-profile sporting events where customer engagement and brand visibility remain central.
