The Public Utilities Commission in the state of Nevada has been asked by several casino gaming venues as of late for permission to leave NV Energy and use other providers for their electricity needs. The latest casino to do so is the Peppermill Resort which is located in the Reno region of the state.  Operated by Peppermill Casinos Inc., the decision by the Reno facility may mean that other casinos in the area are planning on asking the same, to leave NV Energy and use another company for electricity.

In 2001, a law was created that would allow large consumers of energy to purchase their power from an alternative source. Earlier in 2016, three operators of casino facilities located on The Strip were given permission by the commission to leave NV Energy. The three casinos had to pay over $125 million to be able to do so. By this October, both Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts International plan on leaving NV Energy as well.

If given permission by the commission, Peppermill would be using Cargill Power Markets for their power needs. A company based in Minnesota and very active in the Western region of the United States, Cargill Power Markets might be able to offer their services by early next year with Peppermill asking the commission to be able to stop using NV Energy services by March 2017.

The Public Utilities Commission must now decide how much will be paid by Peppermill for leaving NV Energy. The fee is put in place to protect the ratepayers of NV Energy currently from experiencing an increase in billing. The commission also has the right to deny the request of Peppermill.
