The state of New Jersey has proven to be a market leader when it comes to online gaming. Online casino and poker gaming have done quite well in the state, easily surpassing Nevada and Delaware when it comes to online gaming revenues. For the month of March, Delaware saw a huge drop in iGaming revenue while New Jersey was able to post record earnings.
For March, the online casinos in Delaware earned just $151,811, which is a 42% drop when compared to March 2016. The loss equals $108,000 less going to the state and a huge difference in the net win produced by Delaware Park, Harrington Raceway and Dover Downs from 2016 when $260,539 was earned. The biggest loser for the state was Dover Downs, who brought in just over $20,000 for the month which is a whopping 76% less than March 2016 earnings.
Delaware Park always holds the top spot, and despite their popularity, saw a loss of 49% when compared year-on-year. Harrington Raceway, which is the smallest of the three operators, was able to capture some market share in March resulting in revenues being more than double for the month when compared to last year.
With the online gaming win coming in at just over $151,000, it marked the lowest win for the state since July of 2015. The stats were so disappointing that regulators and casino operators seem at a loss as to what happened to cause the significant downturn. Video lottery gaming was down 36% while table games were down 48% when considering year-on-year numbers. Poker was down as well with a more than 50% decline.
While Delaware struggled in March, New Jersey was on fire, seeing new growth in the online gaming sector. The gaming networks of the state saw revenues increase by 40% when compared to March of last year. David Rebuck, the Director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement stated earlier this month that the online industry is on pace for another record year.
In New Jersey, $21.7 million was earned via online gambling, which marks the first time the state has surpassed the $20 million mark and at the same time, setting a new monthly earning record. The previous record was set in January of this year when $18.8 million in earnings was reported. Now, one in every ten dollars earned by casinos in New Jersey comes from online action.
