Dan Smith earns WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic Super High Roller win

Since last month, the Poker Room at the Bellagio Casino Resort on the Las Vegas Strip has played host to Season XVI of the World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic. The series continued this last weekend with the $100,000 Super High Roller event finishing up on Friday. The event saw 39 players competing, which resulted in a prize pool of $3.9 million. In the end, it was Dan Smith and Daniel Negreanu facing off in heads-up play with Smith eventually earning the title win.

According to the World Poker Tour, the top six places would earn a payday from the massive prize pool, with second through sixth place earning a six-figure payday, and first taking home just over $1.4 million. The first of the final table to be eliminated would be Bryn Kenney, with the remaining five waiting until Friday to finish up the event.

When the remaining five returned, it was Isaac Haxton who had the chip lead. Negreanu was close behind. Sergio Aido would be eliminated in fifth place, followed shortly by Haxton, even though he came into the day with the chip lead.

Smith, Negreanu and Stefan Schillhabel would remain. Each of these players had earned a WPT event title win in the past, so it was essentially anybody’s game. Smith and Schillhabel would go head to head often during three-handed play. Eventually, Smith would eliminate his fellow poker pro with pocket aces against Jack-ten. The flop actually fell J-10-10, which gave Schillhabel a full house off the bat. However, an ace on the turn gave Smith the better full house and Schillhabel would have to settle for third place.

This left Negreanu and Smith in heads-up play. It would not take long for Smith to claim the title win. In the end, Smith would earn the title with A-K up against Negreanu’s Q-10.  The WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic continues this week with the Main Event set to begin tomorrow.
