Play’n GO has brought back everyone’s favorite three-toed troll in its latest release, Hugo Carts, a fast-paced adventure that takes players underground to help their friends dig for gold and diamonds and a max win of 25,000 times the bet.
In what is the follow-up to Hugo’s Adventure, which was launched in 2019, the mayhem continues as the lovable troll is joined by his equally adorable wife, Hugolina, and together they enter a lantern-lit mine with Hugo’s nemesis Scylla following closely behind.
Game symbols:
The highly volatile video slot is played on a 5×4 sized grid and provides 1,024 ways to win by default. However, as the game progresses, paylines are split by Multipliers creating an even greater number of ways to win. Meanwhile, wins are awarded by landing three to five identical symbols adjacent on the game board, starting from the leftmost reel.
Symbols consist of 10-A card icons as the lower value pays, followed by shovels, pickaxes, lamps, and lighted miner’s helmets. Landing a five-of-a-kind combination of the high pay symbols earn 1.5 to 3 times the stake. Sacks of gold nuggets serve as the game’s Wild, landing on any of the reels and substituting for any pay symbol type.
Respin feature & modifiers:
The game’s features are triggered when Hugo and the crew appear, with the trio of characters in Hugo Carts appearing on special symbols, initiating separate effects when landing in the base game. Each one has its own assigned reel, with Hugolina landing on reel two, Hugo on three and Scylla on four. Any single character or combination of characters triggers a repsin.
For the respin feature, each of the three triggering symbols awards its own modifier; with Hugolina adding between 2 and 5 symbol multipliers with values up to x10; Hugo drops between 2 and 5 golden nugget Wilds; while Scylla creates between 5 and 9 mystery symbols which transform into matching pay symbols. The release of characters in quick succession during the respin feature gives the impression that they are chasing each other, which according to Play’n GO is “comparable to Mario Carts or Wacky Races.” Players are also able to choose which one of the characters they play as, which is “a nostalgic nod to the original Hugo video games.”
Dynamite scatter & extra spins:
Be sure to keep an eye open for the dynamite scatter, as landing three awards 7 extra spins, four awards 9, and five earns 11. The feature is not able to be retriggered. To help launch extra spins, during the base game, on any spin there is a chance for the dastardly Don Croco to make a random appearance and toss two dynamite Scatters onto the reels.
Prior to the start of extra spins, one of the characters is randomly selected to play out the applicable feature on every extra spin. Additionally, it is possible to retrigger if at least three scatter symbols land. The first retrigger sees a second character chosen, and its modifier is active on each of the remaining spins. On the third and final retrigger, the third character is activated, which sees the trio of modifiers applied to each extra spin. That exhausts the retriggers.
New but familiar:
Excited to extend the Hugo narrative, Head of Games for Play’n GO, Charlotte Miliziano commented on the new release…
“Although Hugo Carts is part of a series, this game has been designed to bring something new to the table. However, we’ve maintained the beloved troll’s cheeky character. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love Hugo!?”
Successful series:
Based on the popular animated video game hero of the 90s, the kind-hearted troll made his first appearance at Play’n GO when the Swedish supplier partnered with Hugo Games A/S, subsequently releasing “Hugo” in August 2016, followed by the sequel, Hugo 2, and the third collaboration between the two companies, Hugo Goal. In 2019, Hugo’s Adventure joined the series.
