Allwyn UK is restructuring its executive team as it prepares to pursue the next phase of the National Lottery’s transformation, with three senior executives leaving and new leadership positions being established to support growth and increase funding for good causes.

The changes, announced on November 5, will take effect on December 1, 2026. Chief Technology Officer Mark Smith, Managing Director of Digital Richard Dawkins and Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Sarah Venning will leave the business as their existing positions are phased out.

Interim CEO Phil Walker will assume responsibility for strategy and the company’s future direction following the removal of Venning’s role. Allwyn will also reorganize its technology responsibilities across its Digital, Retail and Security divisions.

The new structure introduces a Director of Social Impact, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Chief Digital Officer (CDO). Current Chief Impact Officer Alastair Ruxton will become Director of Social Impact, reporting directly to Walker. Stephen Taylor, founder of marketing advisory firm CMO Thrive, will join as interim CMO on November 17. The CDO appointment remains outstanding.

Allwyn Transfers Executive Responsibilities to New Structure

The leadership changes follow the departure of former CEO Andria Vidler, announced in August. Walker became interim chief executive in September and will now take on additional responsibilities previously held by Venning.

Allwyn intends to bring technology capabilities closer to the teams responsible for its digital and retail operations, with security also included in the revised arrangement. The company said the move would support its efforts to improve customer experience and establish clearer accountability for business performance.

Smith will leave his executive position but remain involved as a Technology Strategy Adviser until June 2027. His continued involvement is intended to provide support while the company establishes its revised operating structure.

Dawkins will depart in December after nearly three years with Allwyn UK. During that period, he led the digital business through substantial changes and worked on innovation across its games portfolio.

Venning is due to leave at the end of November. She helped shape Allwyn’s strategy and played a role in its transformation programme. Her responsibilities will now fall under Walker’s remit.

The company’s new Chief Digital Officer will oversee digital products and channels, customer experience, technology, data, platforms, automation and artificial intelligence. The position will also carry responsibility for the commercial performance of Allwyn’s digital channels.

The marketing function will receive a broader remit under the new CMO. The role will combine brand, creative, communications, customer relationship management, product marketing, winners’ services and customer experience.

Taylor will serve as interim CMO from November 17. Allwyn said he has more than 30 years of marketing experience, including work with PayPal, Samsung, Nokia and Pizza Express. He founded CMO Thrive, from which he joins the lottery operator.

Walker said the company must now translate its modernization work into commercial results.

Good Causes Become a Central Part of the Commercial Strategy

Allwyn’s new Director of Social Impact will focus on explaining how National Lottery participation supports communities throughout the UK. Ruxton’s responsibilities will include linking the lottery’s contribution to good causes with the company’s wider social value objectives and product offering.

The appointment reflects Allwyn’s stated intention to strengthen the relationship between playing the lottery and supporting good causes. The company plans to give marketing a more prominent role in communicating that connection to players.

Allwyn has set a target of doubling weekly returns to good causes from £30 million to £60 million by 2034. The goal forms part of its longer-term plans as National Lottery operator, with the licence due for renewal that year.

The operator has already undertaken a major modernization programme, including upgrading retail terminals and introducing the US lottery format Powerball to the UK. The retail terminal upgrade was also required under its Gambling Commission licence.

Allwyn’s ability to increase sales will be important to its contribution target, while the new social impact function is intended to make the lottery’s community funding more visible.

Walker said: “Good Causes are at the heart of what makes The National Lottery special. We have a real opportunity to help more people understand the extraordinary difference players make through The National Lottery and make that an even stronger reason to play.”

Executive Departures Follow National Lottery Modernization

The restructuring comes after the National Lottery completed its technological overhaul earlier this year. The programme was delivered under Vidler’s leadership, although it experienced several delays.

Her departure was announced in August, with Allwyn and chairman Justin King saying at the time that “this is the right moment for her to step down.”

Walker’s appointment as interim CEO drew criticism from some MPs because of his previous association with the adult gaming centre sector. Labour MP Dawn Butler and Conservative MP Iain Duncan Smith raised concerns with the Gambling Commission, citing the National Lottery’s position as the UK’s largest public sector contract.

Allwyn has said the new structure is designed to support growth and improve the experience of players and retail partners. The changes also bring strategy, digital performance and technology closer to the CEO’s oversight.
