The Cali Group is a gambling junket operator located in Macau that previously had offered four VIP gaming rooms at local casinos. The group is now looking to shift resources to another area, in the Philippines, now closing two of the four VIP rooms.
According to information from Agbrief, the VIP gaming rooms of the City of Dreams and the Grand Lisboa were closed down at January 31st. The VIP rooms at the MGM Macau and the Galaxy Macau will remain open. Employees of the Cali Group VIP rooms will move to the Philippines rooms to remain employed.
Kwok Chi Chung, the Association of Gaming and Entertainment Promoters of Macau President, confirmed the VIP rooms closure when February began. Chung stated that as far as he knows the Cali Group has closed two of their VIP rooms in Macau. The group will continue operations in Macau but will also be moving their operations to the Philippines.
Kwok also believes that additional VIP rooms will be closing in Macau. He compared the junket operations to the aftershocks of an earthquake. Some VIP rooms have seen their customer numbers dwindle, with the numbers not being able to support the operations. Because of this, the VIP operators may decide to shift some resources from Macau to other areas to be able to cut operational costs.
Kwok also felt that the VIP rooms of a larger scale may have the most difficulty when it comes to adapting to the decrease in visitors. Basically the shutdown of such VIP rooms will be dependent on how they manage their finances.
