Starting today, casinos in London, England will be shutting down as the city moves into the strictest tier of restrictions in the UK. Casinos along with bingo halls must close due to the increase in positive cases of the coronavirus.
Several Areas Affected by the Closure
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the closure this week, reporting that the Greater London area has reached the new tier of restrictions. Braintree, Harlow, Broxbourne, Chelmsford, and Watford are also areas affected by the closures.
People living in the areas within the third tier of restrictions must stay indoors, unable to mix with others outside of their household. Restaurants and pubs in these areas can stay open, but they can only offer takeout and delivery service.
Sporting Events Affected
The casino closure comes just a few weeks after venues were allowed to reopen. Back in November, England started a month-long closure. On December 2, casinos reopened, and fans of sporting events were allowed to attend events.
London clubs allowed fans to attend matches starting at the beginning of the month, with the Arsenal the first time in the Premier League to bring back fans to the stands. With this new order, clubs in the area will no longer be able to welcome supporters.
Industry Review
The closure comes at a time when the UK government has started a wide-ranging review of existing gambling laws. The examination will look at the regulations within the Gambling Act 2005 and if they can be improved to provide a safer environment for players.
The goal is to create a healthier balance between freedom for consumers as well as harm prevention. The review will also consider if players are protected, whether they are playing online or in person.
