On June 1, Play’n GO, a leading Swedish-based iGaming supplier, released Viking Runecraft Apocalypse, a Norse mythology-themed slot featuring the great gods of Asgard such as Odin, Freya, Thor and Heimdall trying to reach Ragnarok, which is a series of events in Norse mythology that involves an epic battle and the prophecy of the death of several gods, as they defend their home against the trickster known as Loki.

True to its name, the main theme of the slot is the aforementioned Viking gods in battle against the wily Loki. The basic low-value symbols are the 5 rune stones, while the high-value bonus symbols are the animal cranium, sword, horn and Thor’s hammer. A combination of 20 or more low-value bonus symbols is worth between 8x and 30x, increasing to 50x and 500x a player’s bet for a combination of at least 20 high-value bonus symbols.

The game has high volatility, a generous default RTP of 96.50% and a maximum win of 10000x a player’s bet.

Slot features:

Cascading Wins – each time players create a win, the winning symbols will vanish and new ones will take their place on the grid. However, if they can create a new cluster combination when the grid is fully stocked with symbols again, those symbols will also disappear and make room for new ones. The feature continues as long as new wins are generated and all belong to the same spin.

Spirit Wild – this symbol will participate in each win and is in a random position in the empty space of winning symbols. The Spirit Wild symbol also replaces all other symbols and is collected each time it participates in a win. Collecting 4 Spirit Wilds triggers one of the Gift of God features.

Mystery Symbols – when players don’t create wins, a cluster of 5 to 8 Mystery Symbols is added to the grid. These will be matching symbols and will make a win if any of them are adjacent to that type of non-winning symbol. However, this feature can only be activated once per game round.

Gift Of The Gods – this feature is triggered when wins are created with collected 4 Spirit Wilds during cascades. It will randomly reward players with one of four Wild features when there are no more wins during a spin:

  • Heimdall’s Vision – awards 2 to 4 Wilds in diagonal patterns;
  • Freya’s Magic – awards 2 to 4 pairs of Wilds in horizontal or vertical patterns;
  • Thor’s Thunder – awards 6 to 10 Wilds;
  • Odin’s Power – awards 1 to 3 sets of 3 Wilds in adjacent horizontal or vertical patterns.

However, Spirit Wilds aren’t allowed to be collected throughout the feature as Gift Of The Gods can only be activated once per game round.

Power of Aesir – each win throughout the game, except Spirit Wilds and Gift Of The Gods Wilds, is used to increase the charge meter located to the left of the reels. Each winning symbol is added to the meter and collecting 35 symbols activates this feature. Furthermore as soon as it activates, it randomly triggers one of four modifiers such as:

  • Trumpet’s Screech – eliminates or converts symbols around 3 random symbols;
  • Folkvang’s Force – upgrades one symbol type by converting it to the next higher symbol;
  • Mjolnir’s Strike – eliminates or converts 6 to 10 random symbols;
  • Heaven’s Spear – each higher-paying symbol turns into the same symbol.

Ragnarök Free Spin – this feature is activated when no more cascades are generated and players have collected 65 or more symbols on the charge meter. In addition, all four Power of Aesir features are rewarded in sequence for one free spin, and every Power of Aesir feature is applied each time the cascading wins stop being created. The feature is finished when all of the above features have been played.

Throughout the round, players can’t activate the Gift Of The Gods, however, up to 20 Spirit Wilds may be collected. As soon as they are collected, they return to the grid at the end of the free spin when there are no more wins, giving players a chance to continue the cascade. The free spin also adds a multiplier to the charge meter, meaning that collecting 25, 50, 75 and 100 symbols rewards a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x, which is further applied to the total winnings.

Aftershock – as for this feature, it is triggered when the charge meter is within 5 symbols to activate the Ragnarök Free Spin and no more cascades are generated. However, it is triggered in order to make a win.

The selected symbols are connected by converting the symbols between them. Additionally, if in any case a Mystery Symbol is on the reels, the selected Afterschock symbol will match the Mystery Symbol.
