This week, the Kambi Group plc announced a new acquisition. The company now owns Abios, a top-rated esports specialist company. With the acquisition, Kambi will be positioned as a leader in esports services and products. The sports betting brand is ready to seek new opportunities and will use the acquisition to move ahead in this growing vertical.
The Agreement
Details of the deal include an initial consideration of SEK150m, which will be paid in cash. Then, as much as SEK120m will be paid in earnouts. This payment will be connected to the development of products and future revenues earned by the company.
Abios was first launched in 2013 from Stockholm and grew into a top-rated B2B esports company. Abios is known for providing quality data, odds, and visualization products to operators such as the LeoVegas group and Kindred Group. The company also works with tech companies like Microsoft.
For Kambi, the group will be able to increase the reach of its revenue streams and expand into new areas with Abios. Last year, Abios earned SEK18m and after the acquisition is finalized, the company will continue to provide products and services to customers of Kambi as well as non-customers.
Abios is led by CEO Oskar Fröberg and CTO Anton Janér, both of which will stay in their positions after the acquisition. With the company’s extensive resume, Kambi will be able to offer the best in esports products and expedite the growth of the new company.
More to Come
Currently, the esports industry is seeing major growth and is expected to continue on an upward trajectory. By 2025, analysts believe that the esports industry will have doubled in size. With growth, Kambi will be able to receive a future revenue stream in the United States and Europe as opportunities expand within the industry.
Kambi Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Kristian Nylén commented on the new deal by stating: “The esports category has long been under careful consideration by Kambi and we now feel it’s the opportune moment to take the next step and build out our capability in what is a vertical of great global potential. In Abios, we gain the esports DNA we keenly sought, and which complements the heritage and experience we already possess in sports betting.”
Abios CEO Oskar Fröberg commented as well stating that Kambi is an optimal partner for Abios as the two companies share the same values and vision for the long term. The opportunity for esports is ‘compelling’ and the CEO looks forward to exchanging what they know with Kambi and adding the company’s experience to their entrepreneurial nature.
