The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) and Northern Lights Casino are set to significantly expand their facilities in a project that promises to enhance both the gaming environment and the regional economy. This ambitious project is planned to start by late September 2024 and is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete, with an expected finish in 2026.
The expansion will introduce an additional 31,000 square feet to the existing casino structure, which is located on the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in Prince Albert. This development will include the enlargement of high-traffic areas such as the main gaming floor, which will see new high limits slots spaces and an expanded smoking room. Additional enhancements include a revamped front entrance and upgrades to the food and beverage facilities, including the sports bar, restaurant, and a new deli and floor bar area.
Zane Hansen, President and CEO of SIGA, emphasized the necessity of the expansion: “Northern Lights Casino is one of our busiest, and it’s clear that our facilities need to grow to match our visitor numbers. This expansion will allow us to better serve our customers and provide an enhanced tourism destination that will benefit the entire region economically.”
Ceremonial Beginnings and Cultural Integrity
The expansion plans were unveiled during a ceremonial event that included key stakeholders from SIGA, Northern Lights Casino, and the local community, including the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and the Prince Albert Grand Council. During the event, the importance of integrating culturally significant designs and maintaining the integrity of First Nations hospitality were highlighted.
Angela Isbister, General Manager of Northern Lights Casino, also noted the community impact: “This expansion isn’t just about enlarging our space—it’s about enriching our community engagement through supporting local businesses, cultural events, and organizations.”
Economic and Social Contributions
The expansion is set against the backdrop of SIGA’s unique revenue distribution model, which sees all net revenues reinvested within Saskatchewan. Specifically, 50% of these revenues go to the First Nations Trust for distribution among 74 First Nations, 25% to Community Development Corporations for local community initiatives, and the remaining 25% to the provincial General Revenue Fund.
This expansion project represents a significant commitment by SIGA to innovate and grow in response to the evolving needs of its patrons and the broader community. It follows a period of halted progress due to the COVID-19 pandemic but now moves forward with renewed vigor and a clear vision for the future.
Ongoing Operations and Future Outlook
Despite the scale of construction, Northern Lights Casino will remain open, continuing to offer its services without interruption. The project not only promises to enhance the gaming and entertainment experience but also stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit between SIGA, the local First Nations communities, and the city of Prince Albert.
With this expansion, Northern Lights Casino is set to reinforce its position as a premier destination in Saskatchewan, attracting more tourists and benefiting the local economy substantially.
