Jim McIngvale, the popular Houston furniture store owner, has made a historical win with the largest sports bet payout ever on Saturday. The 71-year-old, also known as Mattress Mack, bet that the Houston Astros would beat Philadelphia Phillies in six games and made the $75 million bet payout.
$10 million split bet:
Earlier this week, he said that he had landed a total of $10 million bet on the Houston Astros to win the World Series and split the bet across Caesars Sportsbook, WynnBET, and several other betting platforms. At the time he placed the wager, the odds for Astro stood around +750 across different betting operators.
The bet resulted in historical $75 million payout:
On Saturday, The Houston Astros defeated the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, in Game 6 and took the series by a count of four games to two. McIngvale’s $10 million stake thus resulted in the $ 75 million win to become the largest sports bet payout ever.
The popular Mattress Mack announced the win on Twitter and expressed his gratitude to the city of Houston, the Houston Astros, and his wife.
Multimillionaire bets:
McIngvale has become famous for placing huge bets on sports events across football, college basketball, baseball, and horse racing. In 2022, Mack wagered $6 million on the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the National College Football Championship and lost this bet. He also lost $1.5 million earlier this year on the Kentucky Derby and a $9.5 million bet on the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl LVI game versus Los Angeles Rams.
But, Mack’s $3.3 million bet was a $15 million winning hand when the University of Kansas won the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Huge revenue in 2022:
Last year, he also lost a $3.2 million bet on the Houston Astros to win the World Series. With this year’s $10 million wager resulting in the $75 million payout, his persistence paid off. The prospects from the beginning of the year have drastically changed for Mattress Mack. We calculate that his 2022 balance sheet shows revenue of around $59.7 million only from the above-mentioned major bets,
Social responsibility:
The owner of the largest bet payout ever is also aware of its social responsibility. McIngvale announced that he would use the $75 million payout to promote his furniture stores located across the Houston area to offer special terms to customers. He also transformed some stores into hurricane shelters to help his fellow citizens. After Saturday’s win, he referred to them:
“I love y’all. I love this city. I would do anything for this city. And I would do anything for you,” McIngvale said. “I’m so proud to be a part of this city and will always stand up for what’s right…I will always do my best to act quickly on the side of the people.”
With such an attitude and the historical $75 million win, it seems now that any mattress will lull Mack in sweet dreams across the forthcoming winter holidays.
