The Massachusetts Gaming Commission approved MGM Resorts International application for the construction of a casino in Springfield back in December 2013. However due to a number of reasons the construction of the casino was delayed while other casinos like Penn National Gaming and Wynn Resorts announced their plans of launching casinos in the region.
MGM recently announced that they had finally obtained all the necessary permits to start construction of their MGM Springfield Casino and have confirmed that construction will start on the 24th of March. MGM has decided to build this casino based on a Las Vegas theme and is expected to spend around $800 million to complete this casino resort. Before construction commences, old buildings will have to be demolished and upgrades to sewer and utility lines will have to be done.
MGM expects the project to be completed before the end of 2017 provided everything goes as per plan. The MGM Springfield Casino will face competition from Wynn Resorts who are constructing their Wynn Everett casino resort across the bay from Boston that is estimated to be around $1.7 billion, more than double the amount that MGM is investing. Penn National’s Plainridge Park all-slots casino is expected to open in June this year. The MGM Springfield Casino project is expected to create hundreds of permanent jobs for Springfield locals.
