A woman playing a “Wheel of Fortune” slot machine at the Greektown Casino in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday was the winner of one of the casino’s largest progressive jackpots in the city’s history, according to Greektown.
In a statement to the casino the winner said, “I saw the winning combination come across the line, and the machine went dark,” and, “I thought, I just killed the machine. The machine then lit back up and revealed I had won over $2 million, and I thought, ‘Wow, I really did kill it,” according to the Detroit Free Press. Asked to remain anonymous, the woman said in the statement she planned to use her new source of wealth to purchase a new dress, and trips to Disney World and Cabo San Lucas. The woman also said she would be returning to the Greektown Casino.
The previous largest jackpot in Detroit was also at the Greektown Casino, which happened in 2004. That $1.77 million jackpot also occurred on a “Wheel of Fortune” machine at the casino.
The Greektown Casino, along with Detroit’s other two casinos, MGM Detroit and Motor City Casino Hotel, have been involved in ongoing labor negotiations with Unite Here Local 24, the bargaining committee for a group of unions in the city. On Sunday, workers at the three casinos ratified a new five-year contract, bringing an end to months of contentious negotiations and providing much needed relief to approximately 7,000 workers.
Negotiations between the city’s three casinos; Greektown Casino, MotorCity and MGM Grand Detroit, and the Detroit Casino Council, a consortium of four unions, began on December 1st and continued every day since. A labor deal between the three casinos and the Detroit Casino Council was reached late on Sunday, December 6.
