Macau’s Studio City integrated resort will soon expand its non-gaming amenities with the addition of a private hospital. The project, developed in partnership between Melco International Development Ltd and Hong Kong-based medical group iRad, is scheduled to open its doors on October 1, 2025. The initiative is designed to strengthen Macau’s healthcare sector while advancing the city’s broader economic diversification goals.
Agreement Terms and Concession Commitments
According to filings from Melco International, its subsidiary Studio City Retail Services Ltd (SCRS) signed an agreement with iRad earlier this year. The arrangement grants iRad the right to operate a hospital dedicated to imaging and diagnostic medical services at Studio City. The initial contract will run until November 30, 2034, with the possibility of two additional five-year renewals by mutual consent.
The hospital will occupy 12,618 square feet (1,172 square meters) within the resort and will be fully equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies. SCRS will be responsible for purchasing and installing all medical equipment. Upon completion of the contract term, iRad will have the option to acquire the equipment for a nominal fee.
The new facility is tied directly to Macau’s 10-year gaming concession agreements, signed in 2022, which require concessionaires to invest heavily in non-gaming sectors. Melco confirmed that the project is part of its pledge to diversify offerings and boost medical tourism in the region.
Financial Structure and Industry Support
Under the agreement, iRad will pay Melco a monthly base fee starting at MOP694,981 (US$86,700), or 1.5% of monthly turnover if that amount exceeds the base fee. The filing specifies that iRad will only be required to pay the higher of the two, not both. From the fourth year onward, iRad will also be charged a management fee of MOP61,450 per month.
At the same time, Melco is committed to supporting iRad’s operations. SCRS will provide monthly payments during the concession period, including MOP2.08 million (US$259,610) for the first three months and MOP1.25 million per month from the fourth through the 34th month. According to Melco, this support will help cover pre-opening costs, IT systems, and recruitment of qualified staff.
As reported by Macau Business, the company explained that roughly 8% of these contributions will go toward capital expenditures, with the remaining 92% allocated to operational needs, primarily salaries for experienced medical professionals. This reflects a strategic effort to bring skilled radiologists and specialists into Macau’s developing healthcare market.
The new hospital will operate as a “fully fitted, world-class private hospital focused on imaging and diagnostic medical services.” Planned services include MRI and CT scans, 2D and 3D mammography, ultrasound, and X-ray diagnostics. In addition to the medical facilities, a pharmacy will also be established within the premises.
Melco emphasized that iRad will provide discounted body check-up packages for staff and guests of Studio City, as well as for Altira and City of Dreams. These packages may be offered for purchase or provided free of charge to customers and employees.
Recruitment efforts for the facility are already underway, with iRad seeking specialists in radiography, general medicine, and aesthetic medicine, along with other operational roles.
Melco stated that the agreement is intended to place Studio City “at the forefront of medical tourism in Macau,” aligning with its long-term vision of delivering differentiated products while enhancing the region’s tourism and healthcare services.
