On April 10, the Grand Island Casino Resort will officially open its doors at Fonner Park, marking a significant moment for the local community and the broader region of central Nebraska. The $185 million development will commence operations with a VIP event scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by public access from 6 p.m. The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission signed off on the opening after parking issues were addressed by Iowa-based owner-operator Elite Casino Resorts.

Grand opening and economic impact:

Vince Fiala, the General Manager, expressed immense anticipation for the launch, “With opening day just three weeks away, we are brimming with excitement.” This sentiment underscores the culmination of over a year and a half of diligent construction efforts to bring this project to fruition. The casino represents a substantial investment and is anticipated to be a significant economic boon for Grand Island and Nebraska at large, as outlined by Fiala.

The new casino, positioned as the western-most in Nebraska, promises a substantial economic impact, according to Dennis Lee, chair of the Racing and Gaming Commission. As reported by The Grand Island Independent, Lee praised the collaborative efforts of Elite Casino Resorts and Fonner Park, stating, “They have executed a phenomenal job in realizing this ambitious project.”

As the facility prepares to open, it has overcome challenges such as parking, which was addressed by Sharon Haselhoff, Regional Vice President of Elite Casinos. Originally proposing a 400-stall garage, economic factors led to a revised plan, accommodating approximately 1,100 parking spaces to ensure accessibility for all visitors, especially during peak events.

The casino’s architectural design carefully considers all guests, including those at the horse track’s clubhouse where approximately 400 patrons may have an obstructed view of the track’s far turn. Chris Kotulak, CEO of Fonner Park, mitigated concerns by highlighting the installation of large LED screens that ensure all patrons have a satisfactory viewing experience.

Grand Island Casino Resort will feature an array of gaming options including 20 live table games, slot machines, and Nebraska’s first poker room, enhancing its appeal as a comprehensive entertainment destination. Beyond gaming, the resort offers diverse dining options like Ruthie’s Steak and Seafood on the seventh floor and the 22 & Vine café, accessible to families and serving three meals a day.

Furthermore, the second floor will host a spa and banquet space, accommodating around 200 guests for events such as weddings or conferences. The facility’s commitment to relaxation and luxury is evidenced by the inclusion of a sauna, a cold room, and both indoor and outdoor swimming facilities.

Local impact and community involvement:

The casino not only promises to be a local entertainment hub but also a significant employment generator. From an initial 85 employees at the temporary facility, the workforce has expanded to nearly 400. This growth reflects the casino’s positive impact on the local job market and its contribution to the regional economy through substantial investments in the purse fund for horse racing, benefiting Fonner Park and the Nebraska Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
