The National Indian Gaming Commission has issued a warning to the Soboba Indian tribe that it could ultimately be forced to close their casino on their reservation in Riverside County, California, if violence continues to endanger people on the reservation. Although Phil Hogen, the chairman of the agency, said the casino is not in immediate danger of being closed, he did say the agency has the power to shut it down for safety reasons and they are discussing resolutions to the problems with the tribe. This statement comes after two separate shootouts occurred with law enforcement that left three tribal members dead on the reservation. That and several recent dangerous car chases led local firefighters to wait for a police escort before responding to emergency calls on the reservation. That policy has since been rescinded so emergency procedures are back to normal on the reservation for now.
