The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) has announced a significant expansion of the Dakota Dunes Casino, located just south of Saskatoon. This development aims to extend the gaming floor by 12,000 square feet and introduce upscale dining and high-stakes gaming areas, promising to enhance the guest experience significantly.

A strategic enhancement of facilities:

At a recent ceremonial event held at the Dakota Dunes Casino, stakeholders, including representatives from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, the Saskatoon Tribal Council, and SIGA, commemorated the beginning of this ambitious project. Chief Darcy Bear of the Whitecap Dakota Nation emphasized the timely nature of this expansion, coinciding with the construction of the Dakota Dunes Thermal Spa, an upcoming attraction on the resort’s premises. “All of these enhancements will only further increase the number of visitors and position the property as the premier destination resort in the province,” Chief Bear stated.

The expansion is not just about physical growth but also about enhancing the quality of service and amenities. Zane Hansen, SIGA President and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, which include a deli, a floor bar, and a Teppanyaki-style grill, alongside a sophisticated high-limit table gaming area. “We are excited to provide an even more amazing experience for our casino guests,” Hansen noted.

The expansion is also set to bolster employment, particularly for the First Nation community. Tribal Chief Mark Arcand of the Saskatoon Tribal Council highlighted the casino’s role as a major First Nation employer, with over 74 percent of its workforce being First Nation members. “With the expansion comes growth, and the potential to create even more job opportunities,” Arcand added in SIGA’s press release.

SIGA’s unique economic model plays a crucial role in supporting local communities. As a non-profit entity, it reinvests all net revenue into Saskatchewan, with 50 percent going to the First Nations Trust for distribution among the 74 First Nations in the province, 25 percent to Community Development Corporations to fund local initiatives, and the remaining 25 percent to the provincial General Revenue Fund.

Sustained operations and future plans:

Despite the ongoing construction, scheduled to begin in November and conclude in 2026, Dakota Dunes Casino will remain open to serve its patrons. This ensures that the casino continues to offer its services without disruption while eagerly anticipating the completion of its expanded facilities.

In planning the expansion, SIGA has committed to implementing environmentally sustainable building practices. These include the use of energy-efficient materials and systems, as well as the integration of green spaces around the casino complex to promote biodiversity and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the surroundings.
