Carl Icahn new owner of Trump Taj Mahal has once again been in the media and submitted a missive about the union members of Local 54. Atlantic City, New Jersey’s main casino union is under fire again with the fourth missive Icahn has sent. Icahn says the union is nothing better than a group of mobsters. Local 54 of the Unite-Here union received yet another letter from Icahn that calls the leadership a protection racket particularly with regard to the health care plan the union requires.

Icahn rescuing the casino from bankruptcy is looking to change the health insurance over to the Affordable Care Act, which is a legal option under federal law. However, leadership from the union says the Unite-Here health plan has to say. It costs the company $140 million per year.

Icahn recently saved Trump Entertainment Resorts, previous owners of the Taj Mahal from bankruptcy. To save the casino Icahn says a change in the health insurance offered is a first step. The other side of the story is that employees have to pay some out of pocket expenses for insurance under hisplan, which according to the union is not affordable for them.
