Democratic leaders in the United States House of Representatives reportedly pulled scheduled votes on a pair of tribal casino measures earlier today after President, Donald Trump (pictured), unexpectedly issued a tweet expressing his opposition to one of the pieces of legislation.

Tribal project:

According to a report from CNBC.com, the 435-member body was due to consider House Resolution (HR) 312 this afternoon in an attempt to facilitate an effort from the federally-recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to build a new casino resort on land the group owns in southern Massachusetts.

The news domain reported that the Democratic-controlled chamber was simultaneously set to review an associated measure in HR 375 that would make it easier for the United States Department of the Interior to place plots of land into trust for Native American tribes such as the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe so that they could subsequently construct and run casinos.

Timely tweet:

However, CNBC.com reported that these votes have now been shelved after Trump released a tweet yesterday afternoon in which he urged his Republican counterparts in the United States House of Representatives to oppose HR 312. The communication was the first time the 72-year-old President had ever mentioned either piece of legislation in public and specifically mentioned Massachusetts’ senior United States Senator, Elizabeth Warren.

Reportedly read Trump’s tweet…

“Republicans shouldn’t vote for HR 312, a special interest casino bill, backed by Elizabeth (Pocahontas) Warren. It is unfair and doesn’t treat Native Americans equally.”

Lobbyist involvement:

It is rare for an American President to officially weigh in on pieces on legislation that impact private sector ventures while also detailing that Trump’s tweet was issued about an hour after a similar communication appeared from White House advisor, Matt Schlapp.

Contextualized connection:

In an attempt to provide some context, the news domain explained that Schlapp is listed as a lobbyist for Cove Strategies, which is known to provide its services to regional American casino operator Twin River Worldwide Holdings Incorporated. He is furthermore married to senior White House communications aide, Mercedes Schlapp, and serves as President for the American Conservative Union.

Twin River Worldwide Holdings Incorporated is responsible for five casino properties including Rhode Island’s Tiverton Casino Hotel and Twin River Casino Hotel, which sit approximately 21 and 33 miles respectively from the land on which the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe would like to build its new casino resort.
