In 2014, MGM was given licensing approval to build a casino close to the border of Connecticut, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The casino was set to open in 2017 but MGM has now asked for a delay based on a project involving I-91 highway. The delay would mean the casino would open in 2018 but is necessary as the highway project would cause congestion and would restrict the guests of the casino as well as employees and vendors.
After sending in their request to regulators, MGM has now received approval on the delay. The casino will be able to delay the opening of the Springfield facility by one year. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission signed off on the MGM proposal as well as a horse racing proposal yesterday. The live horse racing proposal will see the activity returning to Suffolk Downs which is located in Boston.
The Interstate 91 project will not be completed until the summer of 2018, so MGM would be opening their property in September 2018. Players in the area will have to wait at least one more year to enjoy the $800 million hotel, casino and entertainment venue.
