The MGM Springfield project of Massachusetts is moving along smoothly, with the latest happenings involving the move of the First Spiritualist Church. The 129 year old church will be relocated as it currently sits in the location where the casino gaming floor of the MGM property will be.
Workers will begin on Tuesday moving the historic church of Springfield to a new home down the street from the casino project. Moving only a couple of blocks, the church will be able to remain a fixture of the community. The relocation of the historic building was part of the historical preservation commitment made by MGM to the city of Springfield.
MGM executives plan on hosting a news conference when the move begins, according to Mayor Domenic Sarno. The historic church was first named the French Protestant Church when it was constructed and then by 1919 gained the name the First Spiritualist Church. Since 1987, the church has been on the National Register of Historic Places.
