In a concerted effort to curb illegal online gambling activities, the Cyber Crime Police Station in Ribandar, Goa, has blocked 61 gambling websites as part of an extensive crackdown. This action aligns with ongoing measures to tackle fraudulent online operations and protect individuals from financial exploitation.
According to Cyber Crime SP Rahul Gupta, the crackdown forms part of a larger operation that has resulted in the blocking of 157 websites and social media accounts since November 2024. These actions are carried out under legal provisions, including Section 168 of the BNSS, Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, and Rule 3(1)(d) of the IT Rules, according to Times of India.
In a recent media statement, Gupta emphasized the necessity of these actions to combat the growing menace of online gambling scams. “To combat illegal online gambling activities, the Cyber Crime Police Station, Ribandar, Goa, has taken stringent measures by blocking 61 gambling websites,” Gupta stated according to The Goan. He further noted that these efforts are aimed at shielding vulnerable individuals from financial losses associated with fraudulent gambling platforms.
Investigations and Public Cooperation Encouraged
The Cyber Crime Police have commenced investigations into the blocked gambling sites to identify those responsible for their operation. The authorities have also encouraged the public to report any suspicious or illegal online gambling activities to ensure prompt action against violators.
This latest move follows an earlier operation where the Cyber Cell had blocked 96 websites and social media accounts under the same legal framework. The cumulative number of blocked sites and accounts now stands at 157, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to tackling cyber fraud.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of public vigilance in reporting illegal activities, highlighting the necessity of cooperation to curb the proliferation of fraudulent online operations. Gupta advised citizens to remain alert and report any unauthorized online gambling platforms they come across.
Growing Concerns Over Online Gambling Scams
Illegal online gambling has become a pressing concern for authorities, with several cases of financial fraud being reported in recent years. The rapid expansion of digital platforms has made it easier for fraudulent operators to target unsuspecting individuals, leading to significant financial losses.
In light of these developments, the Cyber Crime Police have urged internet users to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of online platforms before engaging in any gambling activities. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to curbing cyber fraud and enhancing online safety.
The recent crackdown by Goa‘s Cyber Crime Police is part of a broader national effort in India to combat the growing threat of online financial crimes, reinforcing the importance of regulatory measures and public cooperation in ensuring a safer digital environment.
