For the eighth year in a row, the Battle of Malta broke records, with 2019 generating 4,657 entries and a huge prize pool of €2,258,645. There were 35 events on the schedule with the Main Event featuring a €1 million guarantee. The Main Event had 2,961 unique players with more than five starting flights. With a €555 buy-in, the tournament was relatively affordable. The turnout was much larger than last year, by almost 1,000 players, setting a new event record!

Heads-Up Deal:

Of those competing in the event, it was Serghei Lisii who earned the first-place finish. He won the event after defeating Steven van Zadelhoff in heads-up play. The two cut a deal for €217,167 each and decided to play it out for the remaining €30k and the tournament trophy.

The Battle of Malta 2019 took place at the InterContinental Arena, hosted by Casino Malta. The series ran from the 15th to the 22nd of October.

Van Zadelhoff was the most experienced poker player at the final table of the Main Event. Despite his success and a WCOOP win, the prize from this event was the largest live tournament cashout in his career. He has found great success online, having won the World Championship of Online Poker Main Event in 2017, earning a whopping $1.6 million for the first-place finish.

2019 Success:

It seems every year, the Battle of Malta gets bigger and better than ever. This year, more than 13,000 tournament entries were made overall during the seven day festival. The series has gotten so large, an extra day was added to the Main Event!
