In the American state of Kansas and legislators have reportedly approved a measure that would allow local sportsbetting aficionados to place wagers in person and via a host of mobile devices.
According to a report from a source, the legislation was ratified by the Kansas State Senate earlier today via a 21-to-13 margin only about 24 hours after being backed by the Kansas House of Representatives by a 73-to-49 margin. The proposal is now purportedly headed to the desk of Kansas Governor Laura Kelly (pictured) and could be enacted as soon as January so as to allow the state to bank up to $10 million in additional annual tax revenues.
Predicted profusion:
Kansas has a population of slightly less than three million people and the new legislation would reportedly allow individuals over the age of 21 to place wagers on a wide range of professional and collegiate sports using a plethora of mobile devices. The measure purportedly furthermore calls for such aficionados to be permitted to lodge in-person bets at up to 50 retail locations alongside sportsbooks situated within the state’s four commercial casinos, which encompass the Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel, Boot Hill Casino and Resort, Kansas Star Casino and Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway.
Attraction aim:
The source detailed that the recently-sanction legislation would moreover allow the state’s numerous tribal casinos to get in on the sportsbetting action while establishing a 10% tax rate on each wager placed. The measure is to purportedly also see 80% of any resultant public revenues placed into a special fund to help bring professional sports franchises to Kansas, which it is hoped will eventually lead to the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) relocating the nine miles west to a new site in ‘The Sunflower State.’
Grand plan:
Kansas State Senator Rob Olson supported the sportsbetting legislation and he reportedly disclosed that these funds could provide an incentive to get the NFL franchise to move out of Arrowhead Park in the neighboring state of Missouri. The Republican purportedly noted that the side could then potentially play at a new stadium being envisioned for an area that already hosts the Kansas Speedway and the 18,000-seat Children’s Mercy Park home of Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City side.
Reportedly read a statement from Olson…
“If you had a football team in western Wyandotte County, how many places would have a football team, a world-class soccer team, a casino, a speedway, a minor league baseball team and all the shopping amenities in just that geographical area? That would be the kind of destination that would have a Super Bowl and it would generate a lot of money for that local area.”
