Global alternative investments management firm Z Capital Group has announced that its Z Capital Partners private equity arm has spent an undisclosed amount in order to purchase multi-media sports information firm Sports Information Group and its flagship Daily Racing Form horseracing platform.
Established in 1894, Daily Racing Form churns out up to 2,000 pages of unique statistical and editorial copy every day except Christmas Day via as many as 20 daily editions. There is also a companion website at DRF.com that provides aficionados with a place to wager online and last year drew some 72 million individual bets.
“Daily Racing Form has been a proven leader in horseracing for more than 120 years, transforming from a daily print newspaper to a multi-channel media company and comprehensive online betting platform,” read a statement from James Zenni, President and Chief Executive Officer for Z Capital Group, which has offices in Chicago and New York City. “We are excited to support Daily Racing Form’s continued digital growth and expansion of its online betting platform as we add Daily Racing Form to our investment portfolio.”
According to a report from the Bloomberg news service, the deal was completed for less than $100 million and also encompassed the DRF Breeding service, which provides horseracing fans with the latest news on sales and auctions.
“We can make the digital offering better and the business will grow and we’re in the great position where if that online market opened we could take advantage of it,” Zenni reportedly told the news service. “This company has potential to be one of the first movers in online gaming for all sports.”
Bloomberg reported that Sports Information Group was formed by Arlington Capital Partners in 2007 before the private equity firm spent a reported $200 million to acquire the Daily Racing Form brand.
“We are thrilled to join the Z Capital [Group] family,” read a statement from John Hartig, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for New York City-based Sports Information Group. “Z Capital [Group’s] financial strength, experience, insight and operational expertise will help Daily Racing Form and the company’s other platforms continue to enhance and expand our digital offerings and better serve our loyal readers and customers while staying true to the publication’s rich history and its market-leading brand.”
