Thirteen years after the launch of what was hyped at the time as the future of British casinos, Genting Club Star City, is expected to close later in January.
Owners of the Birmingham casino that opened in 2003, Genting UK, is currently working with staff regarding their placement in new jobs throughout the North West.
Hit with the opening of another Genting casino, the company that is part of the Genting Group, opened its twelve-story 540,000 square feet Resorts World Birmingham in October last year.
Genting UK said: “Genting UK are constantly reviewing their business to ensure they can offer the best possible facilities to customers and staff in the most efficient way. Earlier this week, we began consultations to relocate support staff from offices in Liverpool to Birmingham where we already have a large support function. We are also considering the future of our Star City casino in Birmingham. It operates in the shadow of our Resorts World facility, which offers some of the best leisure facilities in the world including an international casino, hotel and shopping centre. We have begun consultations with our staff and will make a decision in the near future. Our staff remain a priority and there are many opportunities for them in our facilities across the region and our estate nationally,” according to G3 Newswire.
Genting Malaysia Bhd (MYX:4715), part of the Malaysian conglomerate, recently announced that while it would be increasing the number of tables at its new gaming venue, it would not be expanding.
The Genting Group is having a strong year in 2016, its elevated performance having been attributed to higher gaming revenue generated by its Birmingham casino and its casinos in New York City and the Bahamas. In addition, Resorts World Malaysia has performed well in its hospitality and leisure arm of the business.
