The coronavirus pandemic led to casino resorts closing around the world, starting in March. Since that time, venues have remained closed in an effort to slow the spread of the deadly disease. Over the past few weeks, casinos in areas like the United States have started to get back to work. For Genting Malaysia, the operator has plans to reopen two of its four properties in Malaysia. Resorts World Genting will not open and remains closed until further notice.

Reopening Properties:

Genting Malaysia will reopen the Resorts World Langkawi and Resorts World Kijal on June 16. The Resorts World Genting, the operator’s flagship property, and Resorts World Awana will not reopen. Each of the four locations has been closed since March 18 when a Movement Control Order was issued by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Last week, a COVID-19 recovery plan was introduced by the Prime Minister, according to the source, in place through August 31. Even though the order was put in place, there is still no date as to when the Resorts World Genting property will open back up.

Changing Tactics due to the Virus:

In March, it was announced that the casinos would close, and it was expected that they would be operational by April. In March, Resorts World announced the hotel, food, and beverage along with the casino, shopping, and other areas were shutting down. At the time, it was thought that the closure would only last through April 1.

That is not the case though as the virus has impacted not only Malaysia where the casino is located but the world. To date, there have been 7.8 million confirmed cases of the virus and 432,000 deaths.
