Monday, May 11, 2015, Illinois state legislators listened to tourism expert testimony regarding a Chicago casino proposal. Experts stated the casino could provide revenue and draw more tourism to hotels and restaurants. This testimony comes at a time when state legislators are concerned about the budget deadline as well as finding funding for the budget. Legislators need to close a $6 billion gap by May 31.
The Illinois Supreme Court recently ruled on a 2013 law, which attempts to change the pension systems. Illinois no longer has an “unfunded liability” over $100 billion. The court ruled it was an unconstitutional setup.
The pensions were not part of the Monday testimony. However, gaming industry backers felt the trouble with the pension system was their opening to push for the Chicago casinos.
